Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the difference between CTAC and BTAC (Behentrimonium Chloride)?
CTAC (C16) provides excellent conditioning and detangling but can build up over time. BTAC (C22) is a longer-chain quat that provides heavier conditioning with more substantivity and less build-up, often considered a premium alternative.
Lumps form if CTAC is added to a cold water phase. It must be added to the water phase and heated to at least 70°C while stirring continuously until fully dissolved and clear before proceeding.
Why is my conditioner becoming lumpy with CTAC?
Yes, CTAC is excellent in leave-in conditioners and hair serums at low concentrations (0.5-1.5%) to provide softness, shine, and static control without heavy build-up.
Can it be used in leave-in conditioners?
No, it is not directly compatible. Being cationic, CTAC will form an insoluble complex if mixed directly with anionic surfactants. They must be used in separate phases or with non-ionic surfactants as a buffer.
Is it compatible with anionic surfactants like SLS?
For a standard rinse-off conditioner, the typical effective usage rate for CTAC is between 1% and 4%, depending on the desired level of conditioning and slip.
