Product: Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂)

Rchem Titanium Dioxide is a high-purity, inorganic pigment and physical UV filter, presented as a fine, white, free-flowing powder. This versatile and indispensable mineral occurs naturally but is produced for commercial use to exacting standards of purity and particle size. Renowned for its exceptional opacity, brilliant whiteness, and potent UV-blocking capabilities, it is a cornerstone ingredient in the cosmetic, paint, plastic, and pharmaceutical industries for providing coverage, brightness, and broad-spectrum sun protection.

Description
Rchem is a leading supplier of premium-grade Titanium Dioxide in Pakistan, providing both coated and unmodified forms (e.g., Rutile, Anatase) tailored for various applications. Our product is valued for its high refractive index, which gives it superior hiding power and whiteness than any other commercial white pigment. In sunscreens, it acts as a safe and effective physical barrier, reflecting and scattering harmful UVA and UVB rays. Trusted by manufacturers across Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, our Titanium Dioxide ensures your products achieve desired whiteness, opacity, and photoprotection. Rchem is your reliable partner for high-performance mineral solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between coated and uncoated Titanium Dioxide?

Uncoated TiO₂ is the pure mineral powder, which can be photochemically active and difficult to disperse in formulations. Coated TiO₂ has a thin layer of inert materials (like silica, alumina, or dimethicone) applied to its surface. This coating reduces photocatalytic activity, improves skin feel, enhances dispersion in formulas, and minimizes the risk of free radical generation on the skin.

The white cast is a result of its fundamental mechanism: reflecting and scattering visible light. Larger particle sizes provide better opacity but a more pronounced white cast. To mitigate this, micronized or nanoparticle TiO₂ is used in cosmetically elegant sunscreens, as the smaller particles scatter UV light more effectively than visible light, reducing the whitening effect.

Why does Titanium Dioxide sometimes leave a white cast on the skin?

Extensive scientific research and regulatory bodies worldwide (including the FDA and EU SCCS) have concluded that TiO₂ nanoparticles, when used in topically applied sunscreens, are safe. The particles remain on the surface of the skin's stratum corneum and do not penetrate healthy, intact skin.

Is nanoparticle Titanium Dioxide safe for use in sunscreens?

Due to concerns about the potential for inhalation of fine particles, the use of TiO₂ (and ZnO) in powder or spray forms that could lead to respiratory exposure is restricted or requires specific safety data. For spray sunscreens, the mineral particles must be incorporated in a way that prevents aerosolization of respirable particles.

Can Titanium Dioxide be used in spray-on sunscreen formulations?

When handling the powder, use personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety goggles, and, most importantly, a NIOSH-approved dust mask (N95) to prevent inhalation. Avoid creating dust. In case of a spill, avoid dry sweeping; use a HEPA-filter vacuum or wet cleaning methods. Always refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for comprehensive safety and first-aid measures.
